Infant abuse case yields more charges for North Clay mother
Twenty-six year old Amanda Cozart of the 800 block of North Clay made her initial appearance in Morgan County Court this morning following her Monday arrest. She's charged with three counts of aggravated battery of a child and one count of endangering the life or health of a child.
Public Defender Anne Clough was appointed to represent Cozart, and bond was set at $100,000.
The charges, as expected, mirror those that 40-year-old Walter Brown of the 800 block of North Clay is facing. He was arrested Sunday in Shannon County, Missouri on Jacksonville Police warrants for aggravated battery of a child, unlawful restraint and endangering the life or health of a child.
Both arrests stem from severe injuries sustained by the couple's three-month-old daughter in mid-June. The girl was listed in intensive care before being released last week from Passavant Area Hospital.
The charges accuse Cozart of striking or allowing another person to strike the infant. Cozart's complicity allegedly led to severe bruising on the girl's face, skull and rib fractures, and bleeding to the infant's brain. She's also accused of not seeking out medical attention for her daughter when the injuries occurred.
No additional charges are expected in Brown's case. He's reportedly fighting extradition from Missouri.
The couple’s three other children have since been put in protective care with the Department of Children and Family Services, pending an August hearing.
