Suspect to appear on Beardstown shooting charges
Beardstown Police Chief Tom Schlueter says 25-year-old Brandon Jones is scheduled to be arraigned at 9:30 tomorrow morning on charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. Cass Assistant State’s Attorney Matt Mayes will handle the proceedings.
Jones was pursued by foot and arrested without incident in the 500 block of West Third in Beardstown last Thursday, about six blocks from the scene of the alleged incident that left 30-year-old Tom Demaree of Beardstown with a gunshot wound to the head.
Schlueter says Demaree was found by officers at about 11:15 a.m. lying in the front yard of the Parkview Housing complex at 415 Clendenin, which is operated by Cass County Human Resources.
Demaree was initially listed in serious condition at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, and he’s since been upgraded to fair condition. Schlueter says Demaree counseled Jones at the facility where the incident happened and it’s believed Jones also attempted to gain entry into offices located in the apartment complex where more employees were working at the time.
The complex is listed as a mental health service.
Jones is held on $1 million bond.
