Current, potential co-ops discussed in Virginia this week
An extracurricular committee meeting took place this week to begin preliminary discussions.
Virginia Superintendent Brent O’Daniell says the meeting was held after the junior high baseball and softball programs didn’t have enough numbers to field teams.
“So we’re doing some investigations within the school district as to interest to determine if we would have enough to field a team next fall,” he says. “And if not, we don’t want our kids to go without, so we’re going to begin discussing the possibility of junior high co-ops with other school districts.”
The high school has been in a co-op with Meredosia-Chambersburg and Triopia school districts for golf, cheerleading, dance, track, softball, football and boys and girls basketball since May 2011.
It’s not a given that Virginia would enter into a similar co-op on the junior high level with those schools; however, Triopia and Meredosia do currently co-op junior high baseball teams.
O’Daniell says there’s a possibility no action will be taken.
“The investigation into the number of participants might show us that we don’t need to do a co-op, and of course, if we don’t need to, then we shouldn’t,” he says. “Because we want as many of our kids to be active in extracurriculars as possible.”
He says finances are a factor in looking at the possible co-op.
“Another thing that we discussed at the extracurricular meeting was transportation. We’re spending quite a bit of money just transporting kids back and forth to Triopia, and Triopia’s doing the same thing- transporting kids back and forth to Virginia,” O’Daniell says. “That’s definitely a consideration that needs to be made.”
Previously, Virginia had an agreement for high school and junior high with A-C Central School district before they moved into an agreement with PORTA.
On Monday, the school board is scheduled to renew its contract with Triopia and Meredosia-Chambersburg for the high school co-op. If that happens, O’Daniell says administrators and athletic directors will get together and discuss the agreement and determine if any changes need to be made.
